Sugar Plums in Autumn.....

Today is that fun day when we get to sew the blocks together with the sashing and see the quilt start to take shape.

Before we sew our Pinwheel blocks together, we need to make 12 more corner stone small pinwheels for the sashing. So let's get started.....turn to page 19 in the Winter Wonderland Book.  Here are the cutting instructions for making the smaller size quilt like I am. It also includes the border cutting instructions that we will need next week.

Using units D and I, make 12 pinwheel blocks like we did HERE.

Using corner stone pinwheels and sashing strips, sew blocks together to form quilt top.

I tried to get some good pictures of the whole top but it wasn't working well. Our warm fall days are going fast and last night we even got snow. The wind was just not my friend today but I just LOVE how this quilt is turning out.

 

Next week we add borders! I sure am hoping to get mine quilted right away so I can enjoy it before Thanksgiving. Hope we have a few more days of warm sun.

Block Sewing Day!

Today is the day we get to sew our blocks together! After a few weeks of sewing up different units for our blocks, we now get to see the results. If you are just joining me, you can download Sugar plum Sew Along cutting instructions.

So grab your Winter Wonderland Book, turn to page 18 and let's get started.

I like to lay out all the pieces so I can see just how they will get sewn together. 

So lay out your pieces and sew them together in rows. Then sew the rows together.

Make 6 blocks.

Next week we get to sew the blocks and sashing together. The following week we will do the borders and we will be done! I am hoping to get mine quilted right away....fingers crossed so I can enjoy it before and during Thanksgiving.

I love cooking in the fall and the crock pot is a favorite kitchen tool of mine. I think there is nothing better than when dinner time comes, the house smells so good and all you have to do is serve it up.

Sugar Plums...Autumn Style

It's always a good day when I get to sew and I can't wait to see how this quilt turns out!

It's time for another step in our Sugar Plums Sew Along. If you are just joining me, you will need a Winter Wonderland book which you can find HERE. I am making this quilt with 6 blocks instead of the 12 like it's shown in the book and I will be add some borders in a few weeks. Here are the additional Sugar plum Sew Along cutting instructions for the borders and for cutting half the amount show in the book.

Today we are going to do some pinwheel blocks. I just LOVE pinwheels!

So let's get started...turn to page 18 and grab your H and D squares.

With right sides together, layer one H and one D square together. Draw a diagonal line through the center of the square. Using a 1/4" seam, sew along both sides of the drawn lines.

Cut the sewn squares in half on the drawn line.

 

Press your seam toward the darker fabric. I always press each block the same so that the seams will nest together, making it easier to keep the blocks accurate. Make four for each small pinwheel.

You need 48 small pinwheels.

Now repeat the above steps with A and G squares to sew up the larger pinwheels. You will need 6 of these.

Next week we get to sew all the pieces together to form our blocks!

Sugar Plums in Autumn.....

Happy Autumn to you! It's time to sew up another part of our Sugar Plums quilt....are you ready?

Here are the fabrics I am using for my quilt.....it's Farmhouse by Figtree of Moda fabrics.

Last week we sewed the first set of flying geese units.

This week we are going to do the second set of flying geese units so turn to page 18 in your Winter Wonderland Book and we will get started sewing!

We will be using C and F.

 

Diagonally stitch square C to F rectangle. Trim excess fabric from corner, fold back and press.

I like to trim 1/4" away from the stitching line to get an extra half triangle square to use in another future project.

Now for a quick commercial break....I like to use a guide on my machine bed for more accurate piecing. It helps me make sure that I am stitching in a straight line without having to mark each square with a drawn line. My favorite guide is the Clearly Perfect Angles by New Leaf Stitches. It's a cling that just sticks to my machine bed without leaving it sticky. Just wanted to share a favorite notion of mine.....what is your favorite notion?

 

Ok...back to sewing.....repeat with the other side.

You will get two extra half triangle squares from each flying geese unit.

Make 24 of these flying geese units.

Next week we get to make some cute pinwheel blocks... I love pinwheels!

Starting day of Sugar Plums....

It's the first day of October and one of my favorite months...the perfect day to start sewing our Sugar Plums quilt in Autumn colors!

We will be using the Sugar Plums quilt from the Winter Wonderland Book.

 

You can find the Sugar plum Sew Along cutting instructions here.

The finished size of this quilt with the borders will be 58" X 79". It's not much smaller than the 12 block quilt but still a great size!

Turn to page 18 where we will get started using the fabric C squares and E rectangles.

Diagonally stitch C to E.

I like to trim the excess corner fabric a 1/4" away from the seam.

Fold back and press!

Repeat the steps with the other side.....

Make 48 of these and save them to be used in a few weeks.

If you want to sew up the cut off corners, they are great to save for the future....not sure for what yet but they will be ready for when I need them and I can't throw away such cute squares.

Come on back next week and we will sew more...I can't wait to have an Autumn quilt! I can't believe I have never made myself one.

 

 

Sugar Plums Sew Along Time!

Are you ready to sew up an Autumn quilt? I have wanted to sew a quilt for fall for a long time and I think that the Sugar Plums quilt will be perfect made with warm Autumn colors. But you can make yours out of any color or style of fabric you want!

Here is the Sugar Plums made from Holiday fabric as shown in the book...

        And I am going to make mine from these lovely's.....I might add a                      few more but this is the starting point.

The fabric I am using is Farmhouse by Figtree of Moda Fabrics.

You will need the Winter Wonderland book which you can find HERE.

You also need.....

3 ½ yds for background.
1 yd of green fabric for blocks.
5/8 yd of black fabric for blocks.
1 yd of orange fabric for blocks.
1/4 yd of black for cornerstone pinwheels.
3/4 yds for inner border.
1 3/8 yds for outer border.
7/8 yd for binding.

And here are the cutting instructions.

     Please note that cutting instructions are for making the quilt with 6 blocks        instead of 12 like in the book. It includes the cutting for the additional borders that are not on the quilt in the book but I will be giving you the instructions for them here on the blog when we get to that point.

So get your pieces cut out and we will start sewing next week!
